When you simply do not wish to be found, when you need to escape and unwind, there is no better place to disappear than Bedarra. Bedarra is an all-inclusive, private, tropical haven – Australia’s most unique resort, and the ultimate in barefoot luxury.
That place is Bedarra, an exclusive haven catering to those who desire a more civilised escape. Your villa is one of sixteen hidden in the rainforest. The view of the sunlight dancing across the water from your balcony is almost hypnotic.
Situated on the Great Barrier Reef, just ten kilometres from the coastal township of Mission Beach, nestled amongst the tropical ‘Family Islands’ group, Bedarra is unquestionably worth protecting.
The renovations which were completed when the resort reopened on 01Jul13 have reduced the island’s reliability on fossil fuel consumption by 95% with most of the facilities being powered using clean solar energy.
A reduction in population will also make guests feel like they have the island to themselves, further enhancing the feeling of privacy, exclusivity and seclusion Bedarra is renowned for.
The Bedarra experience is now more relaxed, more personalized, offers more privacy and is truly the epitome of barefoot luxury. It’s about a beautiful location to relax and enjoy the tranquillity, with the added advantage of having a much reduced impact on the natural local environment.
Bedarra comprises just seven private villas hidden amongst 45 hectares of tropical rainforest, offering solitude, privacy and sublime views over the turquoise waters of the Great Barrier Reef. With a maximum of 14 guests at the resort at any time, you are guaranteed a sanctuary of seclusion and solace.
The open terrace restaurant, bar and lounge are the heart and soul of Bedarra, where guests converge over a delicious and ever-changing menu, or to indulge at the legendary open bar. An exquisite menu (that changes daily) is matched only by the sublime beauty of deserted beaches fringed by lush rainforest.
Find your own table for two on the terrace for an intimate dining experience in the evenings or join the long table for a dinner party style congregation with your fellow guests and hosts.
Bedarra prides itself on offering unique experiences without equal. A candle lit dinner for two on your own private beach, packing a gourmet hamper in your own dinghy for a romantic picnic on one of the nearby deserted islands or book the entire resort with a group of friends or family for a bespoke tropical island experience you will remember forever.
Bedarra’s philosophy is centred on relaxation however it also offers a number of less sedentary activities including paddle skis, stand-up paddle boards, snorkelling, fishing, tennis and self-guided interactive walks through the verdant rainforest. For the more adventurous, Scuba Diving or Deep Sea Fishing Charters can be arranged.
Bedarra is situated 7 kilometres off the coast of Mission Beach, Tropical North Queensland (approx. 140 km south of Cairns). Scenic 35 minute heli-transfers are available from Cairns airport directly to the beachside heli-pad. Alternatively road transfers from Cairns take approximately 2hrs, with regular launch transfers from Mission Beach to the island.
Bedarra is one of the most beautiful places in the world and Bedarra Island Resort’s team is passionate about keeping it this way.
Here they are not just paying lip service to the philosophy of sustainability and have made real changes to the operation of the resort to significantly reduce their impact on the environment.
With the beginning of new ownership the resort undertook a Sustainability Analysis of the island to determine the population of guests and staff the resort could reasonably sustain on a long term basis. A particular emphasis was placed on water resources, power consumption and waste production and recycling.
The major result of this analysis has been the reduction in the number of guest villas from 16 to only seven, with a similar decrease in the quantum of staff accommodation. The benefits are twofold; the consumption of resources will be reduced significantly and that guests will be sharing the island with fewer people, further enhancing the feeling of privacy and seclusion that Bedarra is renowned for.
A new off-grid hybrid solar system coupled with a battery bank and a backup generator has replaced the traditional diesel generators and this further compliments the serenity of this island paradise.
They now also source fresh water from the plentiful rainwater collected from resort roofs, rather than producing water by a diesel powered desalination plant as has occurred in the past.
Waste will be significantly reduced on the island. Firstly, the amount of waste arriving at the island will be reduced by giving preference to suppliers that do not use excessive packaging for their produce. All organic waste will be composted for use on the island’s vegetable garden, as will paper and cardboard products. Aluminium waste will be transported to the mainland for recycling at local plants.
A new bio-cycle septic system has been installed on the island to replace the 25 year old sewerage treatment plant, with all treated effluent being dispersed underground through sand beds without any risk of contact with the ocean or fringing reefs.
Other initiatives include undertaking all laundering of linen on the mainland to reduce the risk of potential phosphates entering the adjoining Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and the continued replanting of foreshore areas with native plant species that were eroded during cyclone Yasi.
When you stay at Bedarra not only are you encompassed by luxury that is only available at one of Australia’s leading boutique resorts, but you can also do it with a clear conscience for the environment.
